The Second Summer of the Sisterhood by Ann Brashares
I can't believe I almost forgot to add this. I must admit that my affinity for the Sisterhood is entirely owed to attending opening night of the film based on the first book, along with what must have been the only two males in the theater. all the estrogen in the air must have made me giddy, or the presence of rory gilmore's giant head on the screen in front of me (her head isn't really giant, just the screen onto which its image was projected). anyway. fortuitously, the first two books in the series have been damaged so much at the library that the children's librarian withdrew them, whereupon I took them and read them. (months and months apart). and the experience of reading them was much less exhilarating than watching them on film. although the plot is a little more nuanced, the way the characters are written is like playing paper dolls with quirks. paper dolls with quirks that somehow draw you into the plot anyway and make you want to read the next two books in the series....more
