A beautifully written POV novel, gentle yet powerful. Ishiguro is a master at depicting emotional confusion and garrulousness in precise language. It touched me in places - I felt sad about the main character's emotional stuntedness and desire to avoid all sorts of 'unpleasantness'. The three people he was most close to all slipped away without his realising it at the time, so wrapped up was he in his assumed role. Time flies.
