Book 2 of the Discworld series was even more enjoyable than the first! I really liked this one; I thought it was hilarious, even funnier than the first. And unlike the meandering "plot" of the first book, this one had a much more cohesive storyline.
True, there were still one or two scenes which didn't add anything to the action (but they were funny, so I didn't care :-)), and at times the reader has to infer what happened, which can be distracting. Also, I am a bit confused as to the "why" of some events.
Still, I think it was better than the first--funnier and more exciting (with a thrilling ending). There was even a thoughtful message or two towards the end.

The first book has some information on the backgrounds of the characters, but other than that, the two plots aren't really related. Book One is just sort of an "introduction to Discworld" and shows how Rincewind and Twoflower, the main characters, meet, and mentions their histories. Book Two...more

447538 It just occurred to me that the first book is more like four separate short stories; maybe if I'd looked at it that way it would have made more sense. Anyway, glad you liked the review :-)

447538 One more PS to my review on this one: one of the "worst" things (in a very good way!) is that there are no chapters, only paragraph breaks, and the action is almost non-stop, so I had a very hard time putting it down :-D Not a book I could pick up and read for a few minutes during daylight hours when I have work to do ;-D I don't know who I'd recommend it to--fans of offbeat humor, maybe?--but I liked it.

446464 Reading your review made me feel again the greatness of the HP books! I felt that it was only very, very seldom that JK included anything that didn't really seem to "fit" -- no parts that didn't really add anything, even if they were just humorous or touching parts about friendship or Harry's thoughts... Sigh, I miss them! I find that the Benedict Society book is becoming a bit the other way, too much on plot and not enough on the "little tidbits" between characters--though it's still very enjoyable!

446509 Whole-hearted ditto Katie! Somehow basically everything was important in HP because if it wasn't progressing the plot, it was progressing the characters;)

447538 I think that's what made the "mysteries" in HP hard to figure out; you never knew what was important to the plot and what was important for just character development.

Nophoto-u-25x33 true but i would still rate discworld far above HP. The unpredictability and amazing graphic quality of Pratchetts writing makes it so much more enjoyable. Plus when you read over ten or so of the discworlds you really feel you know another world (a bit like after reading lord of the rings) which i personally find really cool. I enjoyed HP dont get me wrong but its a bit 2 dimentional compared to this.
