Of Mice and Men is a great novel and a fine representation of Twentieth Century literature. It is much better than other selections that top this list (here I'm explicitly thinking of The Catcher in the Rye) and it definitely highlights Steinbeck's apt writing ability. For such a short novel, there is a lot of description, indeed a whole world and a whole era wrapped up between the covers.
Of Mice and Men is a perfect starting point for anyone intereted in becoming acquainted with John Steinbeck.
