My boyhood summers were spent on a Maine blueberry farm, not far from the sea. To read Bernd Heinrich is a glimpse into my summer time rural past with all of the fascinating wildlife that intrigued me as a boy. Part of the book follows his adventures with Jack, the raven. Jack alone justifies the book. At times, the book was more technical than I felt I needed, and I felt I might be back in my biology class at Mt. Lebabnon High School memorizing the difference betwen a corolla and a stamen. None the less, Professor Heinrich is a writer in the very best traditions of nature writing.
