For experiencing New Orleans in the 1830's from a black perspective, this is an excellent book. The author's details about the society and it nuances are wonderfully vivid. She also spends a great deal of time creating atmosphere. The events in the mystery at times strengthened the experience of the period for the reader. However, at other times the author seemed to stretch the boundaries of reality to create the plot. My disappointment with the book is that the plot was put into a supporting role instead of being the feature.
