Shep Knacker has long saved for "The Afterlife": an idyllic retreat to the Third World where his nest egg can last forever. When he sells his home repair business for a million dollars, the dream is within reach. His wife Glynis, is not crazy about the idea and keeps putting it off. Shep finally gives his wife an ultimatum, go with him or he is going alone. Then she drops the bombshell that she has been diagnosed with cancer and needs his health insurance to treat the disease.
This seemed like a fairly honest look at cancer and the messed up healthcare system. The thing that ruined it for me was that it was TOO preachy. There was a character whose sole purpose seemed to be going on page-long rants about health care, taxes, or government spending so that the author could get her views across to the reader. Despite that, I was compelled enough to keep reading, and enjoyed the ending of the book enough to say that it was a decent (but not great) read. I received this book free from Goodreads First Reads.
