This book was a very pleasant surprise. I was expecting a light pulpy witches n' vampires detective-y thing, and that's what it is, but it's a lot more interesting and better written than I'd have expected.

- The plotline is original and I never knew what was going to happen next or how things would turn out.

- The characters are well-drawn and unique.

- There are a lot of neat little details everywhere about how the... well, not quite post-apocalyptic, but "damaged in the future" world is different from ours. For example, tomatoes.

- Being the first book in a series, it did leave me wanting to get the next book, but not in the typical cheap ways of other series books (cliffhangers, obvious villain not actually defeated, "what do you mean he's my FATHER OHNOES") but more like "Hm, I'd like to know more about this character" and "I wonder how this relationship is going to develop" and "well if HE didn't do it, who did it"......more
