Ugo DiFonte wasn't born under a lucky star, when he was just a little boy his mother caught the plague and hanged herself right in front of him. His father never recovered from her death and seemed to blame Ugo for it, starting to brush him aside and preferring his brother in everything. When he was fourteen he decided to leave home and make a new life for himself, that's when he met Elisabetta, the love of his life, and her father and became a woodcutter. When life seemed to finally be smiling at him, his father in law died and after a very complicated labour, Elisabetta passed away leaving him all alone with their baby daughter, Miranda.
Eleven years have passed, Ugo becomes a peasant and Miranda grows up to be a beautiful young girl, but times are harsh and food is scarce when one day Duke Federico passes through their lands and decides to make Ugo his next food taster.
