Kind of campy, with some over-the-top emoting. But the creepy (if predictable) sense of foreboding is fun and the story got me hooked. Read the Italian translation.

Donna in a time of flattened affect this kind of book can be a delightful hold-out.

Allycks Seems that "Marina" was marketed as teenage fiction in most countries, but is sold as a straight-up "adult" novel along with the rest of Zafon's works in Italy. Not quite sure what that says about Italian reading habits! Of course you can lump me right in there with the Italians as it never crossed my mind, while reading, that this might have been intended for an "immature" readership.

Same exact story with Peter Cameron's "One Day This Pain Will Be Useful To You" which is however a very different kind of book and, above all, a far more accomplished and memorable work than "Marina."
