** spoiler alert ** Very issue-driven novel. Amal makes the choice to wear the hijab and deals with the aftermath of her decision. This is a story of her struggle with her own identity as a Muslim minority young adult and how her Islamic religion and beliefs as well as her own personal morals will impact and mold her life. “I can imagine that there’s a lot of hate right now. If it ends up turning people against one another then I’m petrified; I’m sickened to think that we will allow those murderers to end up winning.” (pg. 252) Great book as a springboard to the lingering issues surrounding 911. Encourages cultural acceptance and understanding. Amal realizes in the end that her journey has only just begun. “I’ve been kidding myself. Putting on the hijab isn’t the end of the journey. It’s just the beginning of it.” (pg.333)
