This book is pretty light-hearted until the last 40 pages or so. The main character Elijah is a lot of fun. One downside some readers might have with this book is the language the story is written in. Words are spelled phonetically rather than in their proper form. This might take some getting used to if a reader has not read a book that has taken this approach. Otherwise I think this would make a great introduction into the institution of slavery in the United States for fourth or fifth graders.
