The power of this wordless picture book/graphic novel is amazing. Shaun Tan's illustrations draws the reader into the story making us live the experience of being an immigrant. As a recent arrival from a place undergoing difficulties, a man strikes out on his own leaving behind his wife and daughter hoping to establish himself in this new country. If only he can figure out how to find a place to live, find where to get food, find work, and find connections within this new community. We, too, get to experience the difficulties in understanding this foreign language and figuring out how this society works. Nothing is familiar.
Lots of connections to social issues, current affairs, language arts and social studies.
