Down by the River Where the Dead Men Go (A Five Star Title) by George P. Pelecanos
This is one of Pelacanos' first, when he was pretty raw. The opening scene is an alcoholic binge that critics have said is self-indulgent, but I thought it showed Nick Stephanos at the extreme edge, and it was an innovative way to involve him in the mystery.
