Perhaps what interests me most about this book
was how I discovered it and felt compelled to
read it.

I was reading the lyrics to the Rufus
Wainwright's song "Poses" on songmeanings.net
and someone mentioned that Rufus' writing
in the song reminded them of this book.

The writer describes the message of the
song and quotes Hemingway: "I felt the death
loneliness that comes at the end of every day
that is wasted in your life."

Though I still fail to see the book's
connection to this song, it was that quote
that led to my lust for this book.

This book is a lovely memoir of Hemingway's
life in Paris in the 1920s at the beginning
of his career. It is the details that draw
you in: a description of a meal, the men
and women on the streets, the numerous
cafes and drinks. These observational
passages are quite charming.

I love the portraits he paints of
Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald,
among other literary figures.
