This colorful and well-presented children’s book would be an excellent choice for read-aloud in a humane education presentation, or for a “Read to a Dog” program. It’s the touching story of a Marine who adopted a stray dog while stationed in Iraq, and his Herculean efforts to bring the pup to safety back home in the States.

The dog was named “Nubs”—in reference to his missing ears, which, as the text vaguely states, were cut off by persons unknown to “make him a dog of war.” Young readers are spared the reality that Nubs had most likely been used in dogfights, an extremely common spectacle in the Middle East.

Humane educators often have difficulty finding books that will appeal to boys; “Nubs” will certainly fit the bill. Recommended.
