In his second book about submarine warfare in the Atlantic in the Second World War, the historian Michael Gannon tells how the convoy battles of May 1943 illustrated how the allies (Britain, Canada, and the United States) finally defeated the German submarine offensive against merchant shipping in the Atlantic. After May 1943 the allies succeeded in preventing German submarine attacks from being successful enough to affect the outcome of the war.
