 rating: 4 of 5 stars The book that I read was The Natural by Bernard Malamud. A few other books Bernard Malamud has written are The Assistant, The Magic Barrel, and The Fixer which won a National Book Award in 1966 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. A lot of his writings have to do with racial issues that he came into contact with while in New York. Other than writing he also taught at Oregon State University from 1949-1961. The Natural is a story about a man named Roy Hobbs. Roy is an older man who tries out for the Chicago Cubs and makes the team. The story includes his struggles and successes on the field, while trying to win the love of a woman named Memo. 
 
 	There are many interesting aspects of The Natural. The most interesting scheme in the plot was that it would change a lot. For example, Roy would be doing well one day and the next day he was in a slump. There were many other sudden changes in the plot that made the novel interesting and filled with surprises. Another interesting thing in the novel was the main character, Roy Hobbs. He always knew what he wanted, and would do anything to get it. When the coach of the Cubs tells Roy to stop using Wonderboy, his loved bat, he would not give in, so the coach made him sit on the bench. Also, Roy gets rejected from Memo, who is his crush, a few times but keeps going after her. This personality trait of Roy is fun to read about because you always want to know what he is going to do next. 
 
 	There are also some weaknesses in The Natural. The first weakness in the novel is the descriptive language or lack there of. Throughout the novel, the author does not use language that really lets you envision what is going on, and you have to use your imagination more often. If there was more descriptive language then the book would have been more fun to read. Another weakness of the novel was an event that I think should have been different. When Roy found out that he was hurt and would not be able to play baseball the next year. It made me have a negative feeling towards the book and it did not interest me as much. 
 
 	Despite the few weaknesses of The Natural, it was an enjoyable novel to read. It gives you a little bit of everything including suspense and persistence. Anyone who enjoys stories that contain action and perseverance as well as surprises and anticipation would enjoy this novel.
