it was ok
bookshelves: fantasy
Read in September, 2011

This book is described as a dark fantasy, and while there are definitely some very dark elements (squirm inducing torture scenes, rape of young girls), the book is actually rather "light" on the fantasy. The plot is full of things like ... the Lord of Hell doting on his daughter ... the most infamous male sex slave who is so abused and therefore repulsed by women that not even Viagra can cure his ED. LOL. Ok, admittedly, this is a horrible synopsis of the book, there is actually much more plot than that. But not really the meaty kind of plot you expect in a fantasy novel. In addition, the world, while intricate, is very confusing and not fleshed out well at all. The writing itself is mediocre. The last 70 or so pages saves the book, and the cliffhanger ending does actually make me want to read the 2nd book at some point (esp since I already have it). Overall, not a good stand alone but perhaps the next 2 books can save the trilogy.

Virginia That good, huh? Good thing I haven't added it to the queue yet!

Sarah yeah, I'd hold off. Maybe if the next book improves greatly. I can't believe it's compared to Jacqueline Carey, not at the same level at all

Virginia I'm getting a bit burnt out on fantasy right now, anyway. Glad to know the writing is mediocre. No matter how good the plot or story is, I can never get past bad writing!

Virginia Ok, I just read some synopses on Wikipedia, and it just sounds stupid. But of course, all summaries of major books can sound stupid.

Sarah Yes yes, that's the problem I had with NoTW. Not that it was bad writing per say, just not my taste

Virginia Hahahaha. I just read a review that said the book gave him "brain herpes"!! hahahahahah! And, as you may recall, I hated NoTW. But I loved tWMF. *shrug* Go figure!

Sarah LOL!!! I know, I still might read tWMF at some point, mostly bc I'm curious
