Is It Night or Day? is a story of a young girl's assimilation into the American culture in the late 1930's and 40's. Sent to America to avoid Hitler's terror, Edith, the main character, suffers from rejection, isolation, loneliness and ridicule. She has lost everything, her family, her friends, her home, her community, her country and her language. Placed into a foreign home in a new land only adds to her confusion and despair. The small daily happenings that shape a life are torture for Edith. Family bonds that give all of us our identity, are lost to her. The author imprints such a powerful story that you cannot help but feel you are walking in this child's footsteps and feeling her pain. Yet, despite her ordeals, she is molded as a fine piece of clay into who she is and who she is to become. The writing is powerful. You will question your own actions after reading this book. It will make you contemplate how your behavior, your words, your actions have impacted others who have crossed your path. It will force you to re-access your judgements, your values, your acts of kindness or lack thereof. Based on the life story of the mother of the author, this book is a must read.
