reading this book felt something like being dropped into the middle of a semester at st. john's, which is to say, i was wildly unprepared & spent the entire 300-&-some-odd pages flailing mentally in a desperate attempt to catch up. if i, as a reader, had a more solid background on some on the canonical literature she referenced (as opposed to my encyclopedic knowledge of babysitters club books & riot grrrl zines) & had ever sat through a black & white movie in my entire life (i have watched maybe five movies total in the last two years), perhaps i could have followed along better. the issue here was my reference points as a reader, rather than zadie smith's skill as a writer. i actually rather enjoy zadie smith's fiction & was really excited to read this collection of essays. my excitement died about two paragraphs in. SO RELIEVED i didn't pay money for this (another library hold--i love the lawrence public library!).
