it was amazing
bookshelves: poetry
Recommended for: Flies in soup, ducks in bars, chickens crossing the road, and a priest a minister and a rabbi

This is an extraordinary book of poetry. Jennifer Michael Hecht takes old jokes -- most of them well-known, at least to me -- and mines them for wisdom and life lessons ... okay, that description makes it sound kind of boring, and possibly preachy, so you'll just have to trust me. This book is alternately (and often simultaneously) funny, wise, shocking, inspiring, dark and vicious.

Probably my favorite poem in this bunch is "A Little Mumba," which takes off on the old joke about three geographers who are captured by tribesmen and forced to choose between death and, uhm ... something less pleasant.

The first time I read this poem, it really had an effect on me. Particularly at the 11th and 12th stanzas, and again at the end. You can find it here:
