Having seen episodes of the anime, I wanted to read the manga, and I enjoyed it more than I expected. The central character's ditziness isn't as confusing in the manga version as it felt in the anime.
Mikan and Hotaru were best friends at their small rural school. Hotaru suddenly accepts an offer to go to a very strange school in Tokyo, and rumors fly about the nature of her new school and the the reasons for her leaving. Mikan's loneliness causes her to follow, leading to a strange encounter and a chance to try out for the same new school...
The real nature of the school is part of what makes the story interesting, but the characters are what kept me reading. The creator has excelled at showing different ways in which people react to power and responsibility.
The idea of a special school to train those with unusual powers and abilities is a popular one, from X-Men to Harry Potter, but this one is a bit different, in a good way. The entrance exam is a doozy, though...
