This mystery starts with the contemporary discovery of a skeleton in a draining lake in Iceland which leads the story back in time to the Cold War in East Germany. The investigator, Inspector Erlunder, is a sad man with troubled adult children and few relationships. He is drawn to missing persons cases as a result of losing his only brother in a snowstorm as a child. Although somewhat depressive, I found the settings and characterizations intriguing, the story compelling, and the names challenging.
