** spoiler alert ** This is my second time reading this book, and I'm still blown away by the intense fight scenes and personalities of the characters. Brent Weeks knows how to make his audience both hate and love his characters. The main character, Kylar is both horrifying and sweet. Everything that could go wrong for him seems to happen. It is heartbreaking to see him turn from a life of killing for his love, until his previous life comes knocking on his door. On another note, reading of the gruesome deaths he gives his enemies, like Hu Gibbet, are brutal and heartless.
The story and plot are expansive, covering many different souls, showing how they react with each other, and how those reactions further the schemes of others. The book ends on a high but sour note, the godking is dead, but Kylar realizes he has lost almost any connection to the woman he loves.
This book follows The way of Shadows and precedes Beyond the Shadows; to comprehend the full story, you must read the other two as well.
This book is an exellent read for anyone who likes extreme action, huge plots, and is mature (probably about 16+). Be warned however, this can be a gruesome and graphic book.
