this was my third reading, maybe my 4th, and a very different experience from the 1st, back when I was around 12. It's one of the 3 or 4 books that really made me want to be a writer, and the first several chapters still astound me; the martian world is lovely and magical beyond belief, and its resistance to earth's efforts at colonization is terrifying and heroic. but all these years later, the second half of the book depresses me more than anything else. i'm unable to ignore bradbury's sexism, and the american nationalism that was surely a byproduct of his age--the book was written in 1948. it's not meant to have a happy ending, but this time around i found the ending almost too much to bear...like a science fiction version of "bury my heart at wounded knee." glad i read it again, but probably won't revisit it any time in the foreseeable future.
