I rather liked this version. Very British for sure [p.24 'If you or your daughter aren't here by tea-time tomorrow- I shall call at your house and take the whole family.':] Quite proper. I enjoyed the details of their lives and activities and the very stiff-upper-lip attitude of the merchant and Beauty. A very matter of fact retelling that I thought was fun - realistic but not particularly magical.

Was not as impressed with the color plates by Julia Christie. The backgrounds and details were OK but the figures were somewhat crude. I did not like the looks of this Beast. He is described as 'something between a bear and a hyena, with a dash of monkey and something of the elephant.' The color illustration looks more like a dark, hairy little old man with bushy eyebrows & moustache and a pair of fangs/tusks. In the line drawings by Perks Beast isn't as comical looking. The dress puts the story in mid 18thc.

This has been in my collection since 1990. Reread for this review.
