This book should be required reading for all Americans of voting age. I can't help but think that if the book had been published in advance of the 2004 elections, we would have different leadership in Washington today, not to speak of the Iraqis that have been affected by our blundering around the Middle East since then. Right, I almost forgot this is a book review...
You know how you're reading a novel where the protagonist just can't quite seem to get his shit together. (and I don't mean novels of the Confederacy of Deunces/the fuck-up variety, which have a very special place in my heart...)
The novels where every now and then there's a glimmer of understanding, and the possibility of ultimate redemption for our hero, but then he slips back into the same crack / depression / obsession / weight-disorder / [insert vice of choice here:] again? I can't stand those books. At some point when he keeps falling off the wagon, I just give up on him and find better things to do wit...more
