it was ok

Sometimes a George Saunders story gets too caught up in its whimsy, its weirdness, such that it gets in its own way. The same is true with when Saunders tries too hard to force a story into an allegory. He's still funny and deft and vibrant in this novella, and I'm still a big fan, but the whole thing feels hollow from start to finish. I should mention the artwork, which is excellent and adds things to the story, fully aware that my saying that is full of delicious hypocrisy that a friend of mine might read and throw in my face.
