Into the Fire (Troubleshooters, #13)
by Suzanne Brockmann
by Suzanne Brockmann
Into the Fire by the ever brilliant Suzanne Brockmann is the 13th book in her Troubleshooter Series. I’ve been on board from the beginning, actually from before the beginning. And those of you who have read Ms. Brockmann’s Tall Dark and Dangerous Series (all of which are being reissued, so definitely pick them up if you can) know what I’m talking about. I’ve been on board through Sam and Alyssa’s story line which carried through several books and made me totally psychotic and anxious, and through Jules and Robin another story line that carried over through several books and again made me bite my nails to the quick, and even Tess and Nash’s story line which was resolved and then unresolved and is now just up for grabs. The reason I hung on was because the characters are so thoughtfully written and three dimensional. They deal with both everyday issues like laundry and food shopping but at the same time they’re usually putting their lives on the line fighting some terrorist organization hell bent on destroying the world. All of them, from Decker to Dave and Izzy to Tom have captivated my emotions and imagination. And there’s the fact that Suzanne sure can write dialog, yes she has a way with words that succinctly and immediately let’s you in. However, I’m thinking Into the Fire may have jumped the shark. I say MAY, because there aren’t any ‘ridiculous’ plot points or any of the ‘we’ve been there read that’ – but because she leaves so many unresolved story arcs between love interests that you want to hurl the book across the room. I have to say, I’m really not a big fan of the long drawn out misunderstanding because of lack of communication. I know, I said I hung on for Alyssa and Sam and Jules and Robin. But truth be told, I’m a bit tired. It’s exhausting rooting for certain characters and then left hanging time and time again.
Unlike a weekly television show where you only have to wait seven days until some kind of resolution after a cliff hanging situation, books are different. You often have to wait up to a year, sometimes more, before you get the next book in the series. To be fair to Ms. Brockmann, on her web site she says that the next book will in fact start the exact same day that Into the Fire Ends and will be a direct sequel releasing in February 2009. So we only have to wait six months? As Meredith in Grey’s Anatomy would say, Seriously?
Given that, I’m still on board, I’d even go so far as to say I’m on board in a big way. Ms. Brockmann always gives us a great ride, dramatic, romantic and suspenseful. And Into the Fire is no exception. It’s a pulse pounding, exciting, sigh worthy book. So yes, I’m buying the next book, ‘gotta find out what happens next.

LOL! So you were one of those (like moi!) who lived another day just to follow Sam & Alyssa? Those were crazy days...anyway, I just picked up this series again, after a long hiatus, and since you're a Jules/Robin fan (is there anyone who isn't?), I'd like to know how the rest of the books fare once Jules and Robin have had their HEA. I don't feel connected to any of the characters in TI, unlike the previous set and I wish the new series staring from Flashpoint had been given a new and separate name.I don't know why but Izzy Zanella's name stands out even though he didn't make an appearance in Hot Target. For some reason he sounds familiar. I think he has his own book (the latest and final installment?) so that I can find out. Anyway, which one's your favorite from the "new" series?
Yes Elaine! I was definitely one of those readers who lived another day to follow Sam & Alyssa. After Jules and Robin got their HEA in All Through the Night they appear again throughout the rest of the books – but because Jules is an FBI agent – he’s the one who really gets all the ‘screen’ time. The next book, Into the Fire, has many of the SEAL’s and Troubleshooters coming together to fight the enemy and sets up the books that follow. It’s also the book which introduces Izzy Zannella’s (a SEAL 16 team member) romantic sub-plot with Eden. Eden is the sister of his team mate and nemesis Danny Gillman. He marries the young Eden because she is pregnant with another man’s baby and as per Brockmann’s infamous use of two heroes and two heroines where one of the couples gets and HEA and the other does NOT get their HEA – Eden leaves Izzy at the end of this book.
Dark of Night was one of my favorites because it turned everything on its ear. We expect Sophia and Decker to finally have their HEA – but that it is so not the case with this one. Here Brockmann breaks with her style; we have two couples and they BOTH get their HEA. Unfortunately – Izzy, who is also featured in this book is still hanging on hoping to get Eden back. Lots of action, suspense and excitement in this one.
Hot Pursuit is great – it features Sam and Alyssa and I love how Brockmann keeps the romance going between them even though they’ve already had their HEA. This is one of the great examples of how an author can keep our interest in characters that have already fallen in love, married, had a child but are still interesting, dynamic and romantic. Seriously – Sam and Alyssa are one of the quintessential romance couples and although they’ve been married for a few years and have a child they are still a couple we want to know more about. We also have Danny meeting Jenn – again the alternate couple who do not achieve their HEA.
The latest book, Breaking the Rules, is Izzy and Danny’s story ( both have been featured in the previous books). Izzy and Eden finally come together and Danny and Jenn also have their HEA. But what’s really special is that Izzy and Danny learn to become more than teammates and finally become friends.
Any way – to answer your question, I think from all the new books Hot Pursuit was my favorite – it had a lot of the unexpected in it, featured many of my favorite characters and was high octane action combined with exciting romance.
If you read any – please let me know what you think.
