CK's review
A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Vol. 1) by George R.R. Martin
The best fantasy novel of all time. Read it now before the HBO miniseries starts, and share the love.
Or, to be more accurate; share the horror, intrigue, incest, murder, torture, warfare and political scheming that is this fantasy retelling of our real-world War of the Roses.
Martin's imaginary world is *absolutely* perfectly made, and the characterizations are as good as any I've ever read, genre aside. The plot is consistently gripping, and for three full novels (looong novels at that), moves from one "oh no he di'n't" moment to the next. You will think "this can't possibly get any worse!" (and by "worse," of course, I mean "better") at least two dozen times.
It's like a soap opera, but with characters that actually resonate, and instead of snarky quips, these brutish divas use swords, blood and fire.
