I really did not care for this book, which I'd have stopped reading if not for it being part of my graduate Prose Form and Theory class. When Childs gets out of his own way, there is interesting stuff to be gleaned from the book, but for each instance of exploring how life gets to desert pools or how water bears can live in outer space, there's a pretentious proto-hippie rumination on human beings as mere vessels for water without sentience or a passage of him climbing to the highest place during a thunderstorm and thrusting his arms up. And I love my proto-hippies. I really do. But Childs is making them look like chumps.
