Interesting book with two alternating stories that at first appear unrelated, but then start to be connected to each other. One story is about a girl, Sadima, whose mother dies when she is born. She is raised by her father and older brother on a farm, very poor and isolated from the world. Eventually she moves out to the city, to find a helpful young man she met only once, and try to make a living working as a maid for him and his master. Meanwhile, you read about a young boy, Hahp, who is being dumped off at a foreboding school for wizards by his parents, knowing that he may never see them again if he doesn't graduate. For only 1 out of the 10 students will succeed through the program. And this is one miserable and strange school: it's practically a maze inside, Hahp can't even figure out how to get back to his dorm room without help, and soon the boys are getting hungry...They must perform magic or they will starve to death!
