I haven't read this book since I was 17 and it had a much more profound effect on me this time. Most of all I am so impressed with the writing style. Even though Scott Fitzgerald only uses words that I know he manage to put them together in a way that command me to reread the sentence and think about it in order to get the full impression of the meaning. The story is very simple and straight forward, but the characters are complicated and the atmosphere is loaded. In the melting heat of a New York summer to the rhythme of the new Jazz music at a time when gay meant jolly we follow the decadence of the post-war generation observed by a level headed observer from the Midwest and join him in his genuine disappointment in the people he met. Not a book to make you happy, but a book you can't forget.
