Wow... My friend Seth told me to read this, and he is not the kind of dude that, shall we say, likes "Magic" books. This is sort of a weird mix of Narnia, Hogwarts, Wonder Boys and... maybe... Igby Goes Down? It's weird. It's unique. It's interesting. And he has some amazing turns of phrase and really great understated humor, like at one point at magic school a dude looks at his emaciated friend and says "Dude, Wizard needs food, badly." And like doesn't hint at all at the awesome subtle Gauntlet reference. He does this with Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and Narnia and Joy Division and Catcher in the Rye and probably a shit ton I didn't catch. And once I started I pretty much couldn't put it down, and that says something.
