This is the first book in the Song of the Lioness series. Alanna is a young noblewoman in the kingdom of Tortall. She and her twin, Thom, are about to be sent from their manor to begin their training. Alanna doesn’t want to go to the convent and her brother doesn’t want to train as a knight. They switch places and Alanna disguises herself as a boy and begins her training as a page at the king’s castle. Her brother goes off to study magic. This book relates the trials and triumphs of Alanna as she completes her first year as a young warrior.

Reaction: I enjoyed this book so much that I read the whole series. Alanna is a strong female character who proves that she can do everything the boys can do and more. By the end of the series she has proved her worth and sheds her disguise to become Tortall’s first lady knight. This is a great book for tweens and teens who want a feisty and confident female as the main character in a fantasy novel.
