This book scared me so badly that I couldn't put it down! Ann Brooks and her estranged husband must come together to help themselves and their two daughters when a variant of the bird flu becomes a pandemic with a 50% death rate in those who become infected. They hole up in their house, hoping to stay isolated from the virus. The world falls into chaos as people flee and die, and what's worse, a snowstorm hits leaving them without power or heat. Granted, this is a worst case scenario, but with H1N1 so recent in our lives, it's also a cautionary tale. Peter Brooks is in veterinary research, so along with the gripping story, I also learned much about how animal/human flu develops and mutates.

Amy I absolutely loved this book and it has made me think A LOT about our lack of disaster preparedness and how fragile our lives are. Soooo good!!
