A quirky travelogue, more quirk perhaps than travel. This is the first of Theroux' renowned travel books and though it was written 30 years ago, it is still interesting as a past view of Asia. Theroux took trains throughout the east, from Turkey through India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka now), Burma, Vietnam and China. He focuses most on the various fellow travelers he met en route, but his observations of the cultures he encounters are always acute.
