** spoiler alert ** Genre: High Fantasy

This duology is essentially the Lord of the Rings told from the bad guy's perspective. The book is well written, the characters are well drawn, and the motivations for the "villains" are beautiful - it really makes you dislike the Gandalf-type character and the other good guys for being terribly narrow-minded. I had a lot of trouble reading the book because I really liked General Tanaros (one of the main "bad" guys) and being LOTRs, he dies in the end. However, the end is beautifully written - poetry in prose, like Dickens at his best.

I highly recommend the series.
