Extraordinary work of epistolary fiction about two Muslim, Senegalese women whose marriages suffer as a result of their husbands taking second wives. The narrator has a complex and very believable relationship with her religious, ethnic, and sociopolitical identities, particularly evident in the ways that she balances Islam and feminism. I also love how Ba doesn't demonize any of the characters--including the husbands and the second wives--but rather has her narrator empathize with their perspectives at several points in the book.
