Since I am a retired jr high school teacher I can believe the convoluted life these children lived at the hands of their addled parents. We probably had kids like this come in and out every day. This was not a tale of horrid child abuse which I could not have stood to read, but one of pathological neglect. These people should have gone into the movie business and never had children. The fact that the kids mostly got on with their lives thanks to helping each other is heart warming. It was a story of the indominable human spirit that they mostly survived. It is a wakeup call to teachers to be on the look out for children like this so you can give them a leg up.

Colleen I usually don't like books like this one, and I was put off at first, but because of the style it was written, and the honesty of it, I really enjoyed it. You can't make up stuff like this, people just wouldn't believe it. I miss you Sherrill!!
