Teenage life can be rough: first loves, first heartbreaks, parents who don't understand, rocky friendships, social commitments, extracurricular activities, not to mention school itself. For Paul it is no different and we are privvy to a glimpse of his life and the dilemnas that he faces. David Leivithan covers all of this but adds his own special twists into the mix. At Paul's high school the cheerleading squad ride motorcycles to rev up the crowd at assembilies and sports events, the high school band covers Depeche Mode at a pep rally, and the star quarterback and the homecoming queen are one and the same--a drag queen named Infinite Darlene, who formerly went by the name Daryl.
Levithan is my new favorite author. I enjoyed this book immmensely--Levithan "gets" it when it comes to the agonies of the teenage years, and his imaginitative prose is delightful even for me, and I left my teenage years behind long ago.
