Chris's review
Laika by Nick Abadzis
A graphic novel, it tells the tale of Laika the first living creature sent into space. Though the achievement is great, its motivations are grandiose and ill-conceived, and it come at the cost of the dog's life. The author, Nick Abadzis artfully draws the story and draws on his imagination for what facts he couldn't find in the Soviet archives. The closing quotes by Oleg Georgivitch Cazenko, who worked on the project, are the most memorable and provide the frame for Abadzis' tale of abuse of power:of human power over animals and of human power over other humans.
