I've now read two books by Siobhan Dowd, and I feel like her untimely death was such a terrible shame, not least because her writing for young adults is truly excellent. BOG CHILD seemed to come out of nowhere to blow my mind. SOLACE OF THE ROAD follows another sort of lost young person trying to find themselves while coping with a difficult life that sometimes feels intolerable. Holly Hogan is both prickly and sympathetic as a main character, and I was really impressed with how Dowd interwove Holly's inner journey with her outer journey.
