I was charmed by this book very quickly, but after the first couple of chapters I began to realize that charm was pretty much all that was holding this book together. This book is a portrait of a place, a small town, not a story. There's nothing really wrong with that, it's just not something I enjoy. In the same vein, it was also jarring for me the way Keillor jumps from character to character, telling each person's story and then moving on. There were characters I loved, and characters who bored me to tears. And it's not that I mind books who jump from character to character (in fact I've read and enjoyed several), it's that there was no over-arching narrative for these characters to connect back to, no purpose (that I was aware of) other than to spend as much time with them as possible. I'm not sorry I read it, though.

Jen Your review makes this book sound a lot like his radio show. If it is, I might be interested in reading. I'm not surprised either, he seems to be pretty one-note with his type of storytelling.
