A small book with soft art and quite an expensive layout (check out those glittery blue endpages!), this story will probably appeal to kids who like fairy stories. Flory, a very young fairy, meets with an accident at the hands (or mouth) of a bat, resulting in damaged wings. She takes up residence in a birdhouse and manages to survive, with the help of a hungry squirrel with whom she has a rather mercenary relationship. What she really longs for is to have a hummingbird of her own, to ride on. When she encounters a hummingbird caught fast in a large spiderweb, Flory learns an important lesson about compassion and selflessness. A gentle message cloaked in a well-told tale. 3rd grade(for reading aloud); 4th grade and older for solo reading.
