Catherine Frerichs' parents were missionaries to New Guinea. This memoir recreates the story of their work and marriage through their letters, but Frerichs also explores the unsettling life of a missionary kid in the 50s and 60s. She wrestles with questions such as whether her parents chose their work over their children, the effects of boarding schools on family life and how her parents' choices may have influenced her own life and personality. The memoir is honest; Frerichs respects her parents' choices but doesn't go for easy, glib closure to the pain caused by those choices.

Wendy This looks like a great read Andrea! I am going to recommend it to my MIL -- her father was a missionary in Bechuanaland in the early 50's and she experienced much of this first-hand. I know she would be interested in this book too. She has talked about how it seemed more like her dad was interested in having an adventure and being the big man in charge than he was in really "saving souls", etc. -- even when it meant his own family somewhat suffered by his decisions (e.g., he left on a 10 day safari trip just 2 weeks after arriving, leaving his wife and young daughter on their own w/ no way to reach him).

I can't wait to get to this book! So glad you put it on here for me to find :-)
