this is the story of velva jean - the youngest in a family with three sons and two daughters. velva jean's father is a not one to stick around for long. he leaves periodically to find work and to explore his surroundings. her mother stays home and takes care of the family. but when velva jean is ten, her mother becomes ill and dies. she blames this on her father and when he returns to find his wife dead, he leaves the young children, velva jean and her brother johnny clay, in the hands of their older sister sweet fern. this is a coming of age story.

velva jean has aspirations of one day singing at the grand ole' opray in nashville, but an unhappy marriage, familial obligations and other obstacles test her tenacity.

an story that is interesting and full of local color.
