enjoyable, stand-alone chapters cover some seminal bands but just during their independent years, before they signed onto major labels. i only read the chapters of bands that interested me (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Replacements). they were well written, obviously thorough with a ton of band member interviewers as well as all the people they passed by (and sometimes used) along the way. i thought i'd read the chapters of bands i knew less about, Fugazi or Black Flag, but it turns out that without the musical context i really couldn't get into them. still, good writing.
