I'm sure it's been done before, but Patterson had an idea for stories based on illegal & unethical scientific research where human/bird hybrids are the result.

Maximum Ride is one series of books based on that kernel.... but before Maximum Rode, there was Max... in this book (plus one sequel)...

This book takes a different path... it doesn't go global... the story is told more from the point of view of Frannie, a veterinarian that sees, tracks, and captures Max and Kit (okay, Tom), an FBI agent who knew something was going on, but was being misdirected.

There is more science, and the horror of treating everything as a speciman, expected to be 'put to sleep'.

I liked the story... but can see why he wrote Maximum Ride... one feels more connected to those characters than to these.
